Day 2: The Importance Of List Posts

Most of Darren’s arguments for doing list posts, the objective for Day 2 of the 31 Day To Build A Better Blog Challenge, can be summed up like this:

List posts are clean, organized, and easy to scan. Online readers are more likely to stick around and share if you post content like this.

Darren has a post called, “10 Steps To The Perfect List Post” written by Ali Hale that is worth the read, but if you want to see some fun list posts in action, I recommend Cracked.com. Here are some recent list posts:

7 Completely Unrealistic Movie Plots (That Came True)

15 Words You Won’t Believe They Added to the Dictionary

6 Movies Based on a True Story (That Are Also Full of Shit)

Still not sure how to put a list post together? Here’s an example, and one worth reading because a lot of people wonder why no one is reading their blog …

10 Reasons No One Is Reading Your Blog Post

1. You don’t know the right people*

(*Right people = sneezers, influencers, mavens, whatever you want to call them.)

2.  You don’t have enough search engine juice to rank high in search results.

3. You don’t tell anyone about your post “the right way” (By not spamming or behaving like a Moblin)

4.  Insert other random SEO issues here.

5. Your text is difficult to scan. Online readers are lazy, hit the high points quickly and make the post easy to skim.

6. The design of the blog makes it difficult to 1) Find where the post starts and 2) Hard to read

7. Too long. Unless you have credibility or some importance in the reader’s view, they won’t stay too long.

8. It’s not easy to leave a comment or contact you.

9. It’s obvious you don’t know what you’re talking about (Nothing to back up statements, no stats, no quotes, nothing. The burden of proof is on you!)

10. And finally, #10 It’s not easy to share your content (no social sharing tools like Share This, Digg Button*, ect.)
