This is the kind of thing I’ve been worried about. A pop culture icon dies.  (Or any celebrity / public figure for that matter.) The news spreads on the social networks. The media is nowhere to be found. Some opportunistic slime ball sees the pop culture icon all over the trending topics (as an example) and invents a sensational story.

In this case, an accusation that has haunted the icon, turning out to be false. Nothing backs the story up. But it spreads like wildfire. People get angry.

Usually, the story ends here. Hopefully, the truth comes out, the slime bag gets ignored, and we all go on talking about something else. But what bothers me is that someone gets a little too angry. A little too drunk. And acts on their anger.

It’s a long shot for sure, but what if?

And here’s another twist: Let’s say the person who has all this venom being thrown at them finds out. They might have a decent libel suit on their hands. And that could put our favorite social network, not just Twitter but any of them, in a lot of trouble. Or you. If you happen to be part of the angry mob.

And. In the case of Twitter, and now Facebook, everything is on the web. Indexed. Crawled.

You don’t have control anymore. So saying threatning things about the subject of the fake story? It could cost you.

Big time.

So listen folks. No one has verified the Jordan Chandler story. It’s a white-hot issue, and clearly a sensitive one considering the recent nature of all this, but we need to show restraint until facts, if any, surface and are verified.
