On Not Doing The Mass Re-Follow

No bullshit social publishing news and opinions. Follow Brandon.

I found Twitter to be less interesting the more I follow people back.

So, instead of mass following everyone, I’m going to send a DM to all of my followers encouraging them to join me on Facebook.  I can do more with Facebook, they can learn more about me there, and it frees up Twitter to be what I need it to be: A way to quickly and efficiently mass organize thousands of volunteers.

I’m not a huge Facebook fan, but they’ve monopolized social networks to the point where it’s not worth the effort to go elsewhere, for now. I am confident we’re a year or two from the next big social network: One that uses video to interact and is location based. Until then, Facebook is it.

I’m going to follow people on Twitter who meet the following criteria:

1) Do not have a private feed (because really, what’s the point?)

2) Have a profile picture.

3) Are in the United States (I love my International friends, but A Million High Fives is not going overseas.)*

4) Tweet in English.

5) Have a filled out bio and website for further information.

6) Have something to say. I did the Scoble experiment and came out with an extremely boring feed (with some exceptions), so if you have something interesting to say, I’ll consider following you.**

7) Confession: I’m more likely to follow folks in NY (particularly in the Capital Region and NYC) and in Los Angeles, California. The reason is pretty straight forward: I live in NY and want to move to Los Angeles.

*Just to note though: That doesn’t mean I won’t follow interesting folks from overseas, it just means I’m not actively looking to do so.

**Boring isn’t meant as a put down here. I just don’t share the same interest and enthusiasm many of these wonderful folks have, and so after a week I felt this wasn’t the right fit for me.
