The Why Of Advertising On SBI

No bullshit social publishing news and opinions. Follow Brandon.

So, I have this theory.

Actually, it’s not my theory, it’s the same line I’ve read in just about every book on blogging and the business of blogging. I know this because I own almost all of those (and other) “social media” books. I’m in the process of bringing all of my books together for the Social Publishing MBA, so if you doubt I own all these books, I promise to provide pictures soon.

We’ll just skip over how sad that is and get to the point:

The theory goes that, after six months, your blog should start to make money. Not a crapton, mind you, but enough to say, “Alright. We’ve got something here.”

October 1st is month six for Soap Box Included.

Perfect Timing On The Cold Front

It’s freezing here in Glens Falls. I’m not quite sure where the Summer went, but I promise to go outside and enjoy it more should it feel the need to come back. Maybe I’ll buy it some chocolate, a gift card,  go out to a movie at Aimie’s Dinner and Movie. Maybe coitus?

The low temperature means it’s time to worry about the heating bill, and as I’ve mentioned in my bio here, we’re living in a house of six.

Out of everyone in the house, I’m the one who doesn’t quite pull my weight when it comes to finances. This is my full time job, and with the heart condition, I’m pretty limited to what I can actually do. Amanda is working two jobs and it blows.

It also doesn’t help that I convinced my wife to let us use her car in our cross country misadventure (the subject of my book, “Astonishing Tales Of Mediocrity”), only to lose the car in Vegas.

Long story, read the book if /when it comes out. The point: We’re without a car and need to share with four other people.

So, to do my part for the family, I thought I’d ramp up the advertising a bit here on Soap Box Included. If the theory is true that blogs start to make money in month six, I’m hoping whatever SBI does make can be put toward the heating bill.

Meet The … Hey Wait A Second, I Know These Folks!

That’s right. Although I tested the waters a bit with potential advertisers, I ultimately decided to just push the folks I use affiliate links for.

1. Busted Tees:  Out of the six, they’re the new ones. Since SBI is a bizarre mash-up of social publishing tips and my sense of humor, the Tees team represents the parts of SBI where you can find the funny. Or the allegedly funny, depending on your sense of humor.

2. The Social Publishing MBA: Over to the right of the Busted Tees banner, you’ll see a list of books under the “Social Publishing MBA” title. These are the books I’m plowing through right now in order to generate the document that will be included on all of the laptops we distribute for A Million High Fives. I assure you, all of them are good, but not all of them will make the cut. So if you’d like to see the full roster of book candidates, all you have to do is check that banner out.

3. GoDaddy: I’ve been using their service for ten years. They’re not the cheapest domain provider, but they’re the most reliable and I have not once had a problem using them.

4. Dreamhost: Like GoDaddy, I’ve been using them for a very long time. Not perfect, but a great, cheap place to start until you’re pulling heavy traffic and need to jump to something like Rackspace.

5. Thesis: There’s nothing I can say here about Thesis that hasn’t already been written about. It’s the best content management system for a self-hosted WordPress blog.

6. 31 Days To Build A Better Blog: There are a lot of crap books out there on how to blog, but this is the only one worth reading because you can actually act on what you’re reading. It costs $19.95, but you’ll make that back in your first three months if you follow the strategy laid out in the e-book.

No New Ads

Here’s my pledge to you: I have no intention of adding new advertising to this website beyond the six here.

For the life of this blog, they’re the only ones you’ll see. The reason? I personally use all of the services and recommend the products from Amazon and Busted Tees.

In this day and age, it’s wrong to advertise irrelevant items to your audience. So, I decided to pitch to you the things I used to run SBI, from blog post ideas (The Social Publishing MBA and 31 Days), to what we use to run everything here (GoDaddy,Dreamhost, and Thesis.) And as far as Busted Tees shirt, well, you’ll see me wearing those when we hit the road again.
