It’s a little quiet on the A Million High Fives front while I let the folks at Moderne Communications do their sponsorship thing. But, I can let you know of something I’m helping to promote while we’re waiting. Actually, two things, but you’ll need to check back later this week for the second.
The first project I’m lending my support to is the “Food Bank Challenge” produced by Canada’s FusedLogic.
Here’s the rundown from their press release:
EDMONTON – A social media engagement firm in an Edmonton suburb is aiming to make a big impact on hunger in time for Thanksgiving in Canada. Fusedlogic, based in Sherwood Park, started the Food Bank Challenge. The goal is to gather a million photos of a million donations between December 15, 2008 – December 15, 2009.
Thanksamillion hopes to help meet that goal throughout October, with specific focus leading up to Thanksgiving. “We know that as fusedlogic spends its days helping companies make connections through social media, there is a large social issue out there called ‘hunger’ and it’s something everyone can help solve” says fusedlogic CEO Walter Schwabe. He outlined the simplicity of the Thanksamillion strategy. “All you do is take a photo of you or your group making a donation to your local food bank and post it to www.thanksamillion.ca.”
Schwabe hopes that schools, churches, community groups, clubs, sports organizations and corporations will come on board to “make this a significant Thanksgiving for those who make use of Canada’s food banks.”
With the goal of a million photos of a million donations, ThanksAMillion would easily help set a record for the number of photos posted on a single charity-specific website. “The goal is to bring attention to the needs of those who rely on the food banks during these tough times,” Schwabe explained. Food banks have suffered a decline in donations over the past year and an increase of approximately 20% in those who need food assistance. In 2008, food banks across Canada served more than 700,000 people each month.
I’m attempting to organize some folks up here in Glens Falls and the surrounding area to participate, and for A Million High Fives we’ll look to collect donations for local food banks while we’re in each of the cities we’re visiting. As always, I’ll keep you posted on what we’re doing here on SBI.
If you want more information about this project, I encourage you to tweet @FusedLogic and tell Walter I sent you.
Also worth noting: Mari-Lyn of Sedona Pies has been doing a lot of work for this project, and she informs me that if you purchase a pie, 10% of sales is donated to hunger organizations. Mari is also blogging on November 13th for World Kindness Day. You can get further information about that project here.
