In a few years, we’ll mourn the loss of the free web. There is simply not enough advertising revenue to support all the content creators. The fact is, most of these content creators lack the friction needed to attract advertisers. How else will they provide you with quality if they can’t afford to make it?
The resistance doesn’t want to believe that. They want the web to be open and free. That’s a noble quest, but as the way we consume information on the web splinters, this quest is doomed.
And these people might tell you newspaper subscriptions and website subscriptions don’t work. They’re wrong.
They’re wrong because they’re cherry picking the information.
More insidiously, they’re wrong because they have a bias. If the content goes behind a paywall, folks like Pete Cashmore at Mashable and Gabriel Snyder at Gawker are going to take a financial hit. Of course both websites, and others like them, are going to pan the concept of a pay-wall.
Still not convinced? Louis Gray has a great post up called, “Think I Won’t Pay For Quality Web Content? Think Again” that is a must read. When you’re done, I’ve left a comment there to talk about why Newsday’s “failure” isn’t failing the way the tech elites want you to think.
I don’t trust a lot of my fellow bloggers on the web, but I do trust Louis Gray.
